Feb 22, 2019 If you're using a DSLR or accessory that uses a microSD card for storage, you'll need an adapter if you're planning on extracting data from the microSD card on your Surface Laptop 2. The card slot on the Surface Book 2 is on the left edge. That would be fine except for the problem that if one inserts a card, half the card sticks out. Now this is fine, for what I suspect was the original intent-having a slot for transferring photos from cameras. However, there are other uses that many of us make of that card slot.

microSD cards
Once you've chosen an adapter, you'll need a microSD card to use with it. Here are a few handy choices:
- Budget-friendly: SanDisk Ultra 200GB microSD card
- Fastest transfer speeds: Lexar 128GB microSD card
- Best price-to-performance: Samsung EVO+ 128GB microSD card
SanDisk Ultra 200GB microSD card
With a transfer speed of up to 100MB/s, SanDisk's Ultra 200GB card is capable of lightning-fast performance, not only for transferring files back and forth but also for gaming applications.
Since it's rated a Class 10, the Ultra is able to store full HD video, and playback straight from the card is quick.
Another nice feature of this card is the free app that lets you automatically manage memory for the best performance. The 200GB SD card will set you back around .

Silicon Power 128GB microSD card
This microSD card from Silicon Power is another solid option for your storage and performance needs.
Like all of the microSD cards on this list, it can store and playback video in full HD. This is great for watching movies and other high-quality videos on your Surface Book 2's 13.5-inch screen without having to upload it all.
In terms of speed, it isn't as fast as SanDisk's Ultra, but at 75MB/s, it's still quick. You can transfer files in seconds and play those games without worrying about a performance bottleneck. It's priced to match SanDisk's solution at around .

Samsung EVO+ 128GB microSD card
Faster than Samsung's regular EVO line, the EVO+ has a write speed of up to 20MB/s and a read speed of up to 80MB/s, and it is perfect for expanding your Surface Book 2's storage. It's advertised as waterproof and even capable of withstanding up to three days in corrosive seawater, so no matter what aquatic tragedy befalls your Surface Book 2, rest assured that the data in this microSD card will be safe.
Microsd Surface Pro
As a U1 Class 10 microSD card, the EVO+ will have no trouble storing your full HD video and high-res photos, so it's perfect for presentations, documents and just about everything you'd store on a computer hard drive.
If you happen to have to suffer through Canadian winters, the EVO+ is also temperature-proof to -25 degrees Celsius. Not bad for .

Lexar 128GB microSD card
This microSD card from Lexar is the fastest one on our list, so if the transfer rate is the deciding factor for you, this is the card to go with. It's also priced reasonably at (though other sellers have it listed for around less) for 128GB.
Like all of the other microSD cards we've covered, Lexar's offering is capable of storing and playing back video in full HD. But speed-wise, Lexar has all the others beat with a transfer rate of 95MB/s. If you're dealing with extra large files or want to watch movies straight from the card, this is the one for you.
See at Amazon
Transcend 128GB microSD card
Transcend doesn't win the race in terms of file-transfer rate, but with solid user recommendations, it remains a decent way to expand the storage capabilities of your Surface Book 2.
While ultra high-speed class-compliant, with a transfer rate of only 45MB/s, it is the slowest microSD card on this list but still commands a premium price at .
However, it's still capable of storing and playing back HD video, though you'd probably want to transfer a movie to your Surface Book 2 and watch it from there.
If you're just after additional storage space for your Surface Book 2 and you're using it more for documents and not so much audio or video, you should look at Transcend.

Lisa Gade does a hands-on first look review of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. This is a 12' Windows 8.1 Pro tablet with a 2160 x 1440 display that supports both pen and touch. It runs on 4th gen Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 CPUs with Intel HD 4400 graphics, and you can get it with 4 or 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM (not user upgradable) and 64, 128, 256 and 512 gig SSD drives. The tablet weighs 1.76 lbs. and is 0.36' thick, and it's usable in portrait mode thanks to the 3:2 display aspect ratio. It comes with an N-Trig pen for note-taking and digital artwork rather than the Wacom pen found on older Surface Pro models. The tablet has the power of an Ultrabook packed into a small package, but the 0 Type Cover is sold separately for those who need laptop style functionality. It has dual band WiFi 802.11AC, Bluetooth 4.0, a microSD card slot under the kickstand, a USB 3.0 port, 3.5mm audio jack and a mini DisplayPort. This is our short form review, and we'll have an in-depth review with detailed coverage of the pen for art and note-taking, battery life analysis and comparisons in a future video.* Check out our written review and in-depth video review of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 here: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/noteb...
Reception[ edit ]
The Surface Pro 3 has received positive reviews. David Pogue suggested 'The upshot is that, with hardly any thickness or weight penalty, the kickstand and the Type Cover let you transform your 1.8-pound tablet into an actual, fast, luxury laptop'. Pogue said that the Surface Pro 3's form factor works well as a tablet, in contrast to the Surface Pro 2, whose bulk and weight limited its appeal as a tablet. Pogue also stated that the new multi-stage kickstand, 3:2 screen aspect ratio, and new Type Cover 3 detachable keyboard made it a competent laptop. [38]
The Surface Pro 3 received a repairability score of 1/10 from iFixit because of the use of a strong adhesive material throughout and the difficulty in removing the display. [41]

Seriously, I think they have a huge problem in getting their act together when it comes to these soft issues associated with their product launches! Btw, I think the best person to address this query is Jeff (jnjroach), I'll PM him and direct his attention to this thread. Edit: In a thread posted by jnjroach titled ' Surface 2 official specs ', I notice that under ports he does mention MicroSDXC. I have re-installed the Surface pro 3 image and it is still missing. No matter what SD card I insert, the driver does not show. USB port works great and the SD cards will work fine in a SD reader plugged into the USB port - just not in the SD card reader slot. I don't think it is a hardware issue although that is always possible. The port disappeared after the update and going back did not fix. I noticed that the BIOS does now have the ability to turn on and off the SD card port, but changing it did not seem to affect the being able to see the card. Is there any way to go back to a previous firmware? I suspect the latest is the one that killed/disabled the port... 01-01-2017 12:39 PM Like 0

It is very frustrating with Microsoft's support on the Surface Pro 3. It's their hardware but they can't seem to figure how to make it work correctly. And the Surface is so hard to repair too. I love the screen size and resolution but I may have to re-think how important that is compared to a device that works the way it is suppose to. It seems to only solution is to wait and HOPE that Microsoft comes out with a fix. I guess for now I will get a low profile flash drive and keep it plugged in to the Surface. 01-02-2017 09:24 AM Like 0

BestmicroSD Cards for Surface Book 2Windows Central2020
Surface Book 2 has a full-size SDXC reader, which is great if you're taking photos from a DSLR or something, but many devices use microSD cards. Unfortunately, Surface Book 2 does not have a microSD slot, but it's worth getting an adapter to increase the capacity of your device or make it easier to transfer data from other hardware. After picking up an adapter, you'll want to choose from these excellent microSD cards.
Immense Capcity: SanDisk Extreme 400GB
Staff favoriteIf capacity is the most important thing to you when it comes to microSD cards, then this is the one you want. With 400GB and write speeds of up to 90MB/s, it's no slouch in performance, and since it's a V30-class card with U3 compatibility, it's perfect for any type of content.
$86 at AmazonBest Value: Samsung EVO Select 128GB
Samsung's EVO Select microSD cards boast wicked fast read and write speeds of up to 100MB/s and 90MB/s, respectively, and they even come with a full-size adapter. These Class 10 UHS 3 cards can handle 4K video and hi-res photos, which makes them perfect for your Surface Book 2. Samsung also offers a 10-year warranty.
$20 at AmazonMore for less: SanDisk Ultra 256GB
With transfer speeds of up to 100MB/s, SanDisk's Ultra 256GB card is capable of lightning-fast performance, not only for transferring files back and forth but also for gaming applications. Since it's rated a Class 10, the Ultra is able to store full HD video, and playback straight from the card is quick. It's perfect if you don't deal with 4K video on a regular basis, and its value is unmatched in terms of GB per dollar.
$40 at AmazonUpgraded Storage: Lexar Professional 1800x 128GB
Lexar's Professional card features transfer speeds of up to 270MB/s, which is blazing fast compared to other cards. It's great for 4K content, gaming, and hi-res images and music. It comes with a USB 3.0 reader, and though you pay a premium for speed, it's great for folks who need to remain constantly productive.
$80 at AmazonBudget-friendly: Samsung EVO Select 64GB
Microsoft Surface Sd Card Slot
For $12, you can get this 64GB microSD card, which had read speeds of up to 100MB/s and write speeds of up to 60MB/s, with Class 10 and U3 compatibility, making it great for all types of content and a great boost to your Surface Book 2's onboard storage.
$12 at AmazonIf we were to make a suggestion
Though onboard storage may be enough for most people, the ability to quickly move media and files anywhere is incredibly convenient, which is why a quality microSD card makes all the difference. When it comes to the Surface Book 2, which doesn't come with a microSD card slot, you'll need a microSD adapter in order to plug a card. After that, the world is your oyster.
For value, it's hard to beat the Samsung EVO Select lineup, but if shear capacity is all you care about, then the SanDisk Extreme is what you want.
Adding a further 400GB to the internal capacity of the Surface Book 2 would allow you to manage content such as photography and 4K media files should you want to do some editing on the go. There are other benefits like being able to quickly move files between devices and because it's SanDisk, you'll be able to rely on high performance with a 10-year warranty.
